Foundation Courses
Students pursuing the degree in Arts Administration are required to present credit for a number of foundation courses, or their equivalents in business-related areas. These are undergraduate-level courses and are not counted toward the 36 hours of graduate-level courses needed for the degree. These courses may be taken after admission to the program, during summer sessions or concurrently with other graduate courses, providing prerequisites are met.
The foundation courses are as follows:
- ACCT 2100 Principles of Accounting
- ECON 1203/4 Economic Principles
- BA 3010 The Legal Environment of Business
- FTCA 2770 Promotion, Publication, and Propoganda in Mass Media
- FIN 3300 Introduction to Financial Management
- MANG 3401 Introduction to Management and Behavior in Organizations
Students pursuing the Master of Arts in Arts Administration will select an area of arts specialization and will take 36 hours of graduate-level courses to complete the degree.
Six (6) hours of approved graduate-level courses in the area of the arts. Students can also opt to apply a practicum in this area.
Six (6) hours of approved graduate level business or nonprofit organization electives.
Electives may be selected from among current university offerings and may reflect the student’s area of interest from art history to film production.
Three Arts Administration overview courses or nine (9) hours:
DRCM 6010 Arts Administration and the Theatre Arts
FA 6010 Arts Administration and the Visual Arts
MUS 6010 Music Overview for Arts Administration
Each of the following Arts Administration courses:
AADM 6501 Development Strategies for Arts Organizations
AADM 6502 Arts Administration: Legal and Business Application
AADM 6503 Marketing the Arts
AADM 6990 Internship in Arts Administration (6 hours)
Final degree requirements include a comprehensive exam before a student enrolls in an internship. Upon completion of the internship, an internship report is submitted for review by selected faculty. Students also have the option to write a thesis in lieu of an internship and internship report.
Practica and Internships
PRACTICA
AADM 6900 Practicum in Arts Administration 1-3 cr. Counted as an Arts elective, this course provides an opportunity for a student to experience an arts organization first hand. Students must research an organization in which to volunteer, negotiate their duties and hours to be spent working for the organization and then write a brief proposal for approval by the program director. Grading for this course is based upon the organization supervisor's evaluation at the end of the practicum and the report written by the student. One credit hour is equal to 80 volunteer hours to the host organization. Students can perform a practicum with up to three organizations, for a total of 240 hours of service, or 3 credit hours.

INTERNSHIPS
AADM 6990 Internship in Arts Administration 6 cr. For students completing the degree in Arts Administration in which participants gain experience in most aspects of the management of an arts institution ranging from ticket sales to contract negotiations. Objectives are set and the graduate committee, the student, and the on-site supervisor accomplish evaluation jointly.
- Internships do not have to be located in New Orleans.
- Students must complete and pass the Comprehensive Examination before enrollment.
- Students are required to locate, research and gain the acceptance of the host organization.
- A proposal must be written and accepted before enrollment by the set deadlines.
- Students must complete at least 480 hours of service to the host organization.
- A comprehensive research report on the internship is required and has to be defended in order to complete the degree.
